Tips for Using a Pocket Hole Jig Without Boards Pushing Apart

Hey everyone! I'm pretty new to woodworking and just got myself a Kreg 720 Pro pocket hole jig. I'm trying to join a 2x4 with a 4x4, and I've set the drill bit for 1 1/2" thick material, which is the max. The problem I'm encountering is that when I drive in the screws, the boards just keep pushing apart instead of joining together. I realize clamps would help, but I was really pressing the boards together firmly and it still didn't work. Any advice on how to fix this?

I usually clamp the boards together for the best alignment, otherwise they tend to shift around. You might also want to check your screw speed; if you're going too slow, it could cause the boards to separate. Just be cautious not to overtighten and strip the screws. I set my drill's clutch to a low setting and increase it gradually as needed. Good luck! Oh, and showing some pictures next time could help us give even better advice!

I'm using an older Craftsman impact drill that's been acting up. It seems to stall unless I'm at high torque, so I wonder if getting a new drill would improve things?
