I'm looking to fill some holes after doing a DIY repair at home. Honestly, I don't care about the aesthetics since we're just going to paint over it, but I want it to be flat. What products do you recommend for this job?

It really depends on the size of the holes you're dealing with. For holes that are up to the size of a nickel, I’ve had great luck with Elmer’s wood filler putty. If the holes are larger, you might need to combine it with real wood pieces for a better seal.
Also, I noticed you didn't include a picture of the holes in your original post! Sharing a visual might help others suggest better solutions.

Exactly! For larger holes, sometimes you even need to insert dowels or plugs to get a solid fill. Just slapping on putty might not hold up in the long run.
