Is Using Bark Cuttings a Good Idea for a Seating Area?

I'm looking to set up a pathway and a seating area in my garden, and I really like the look of bark cuttings. However, I'm concerned about the potential for bugs and insects to invade the seating area. My long-term goal is to create a garden that attracts beneficial nature, but I'd prefer not to have insects crawling all over me while I sit. Has anyone had experience with this? I'd love to hear your thoughts on using bark cuttings as a seating area material.

I get what you’re saying about bugs, but it’s all part of sitting outside, right? I mean, if you sit on grass, you expect some critters. My concern is whether using bark would create too inviting of a home for ants or other bugs. It sounds like a great aesthetic, but is it worth the risk of having those little guys come join you while you relax?

Bugs aren’t going to stay confined to a specific area, especially in a garden. I've got a pergola with tiled flooring, and I still find bugs hiding under the cushions. I suggest skipping the bark altogether; it breaks down too fast. Instead, consider using something like play-grade hardwood chips, which are more durable. But be aware that furniture might sink a bit with the chips, so it might not be the most stable choice.

If you're worried about bugs but still want a garden that's good for pollinators, you might need to rethink your approach. A thick layer of woodchips, around 6 inches deep, can create a good setup. Make sure to dig out an area first so it’s level with your garden. Adding a layer of cardboard on top of the soil can help keep weeds at bay before you add the chips. Also, remember that bark will break down over time, so you'll need to replenish it each spring. Just make sure to tamp it down well, and maybe even wet each layer as you go to help with settling.
