Hey everyone! I'm Matt, and I'm really new to plant care and looking for some advice. I want to get a few house plants, but I'm worried about picking the wrong ones and accidentally killing them. I'm specifically looking for hardy plants because I know I'll make mistakes while learning. I live in the UK in a flat where the temperature varies from 15 to 30 degrees Celsius throughout the year, and the humidity is usually low to moderate. I would really appreciate any tips on which plants to start with, what types of soil to use, and how to ensure proper drainage. Thanks a ton!

Hey Matt! Welcome to the plant world! Picking your first plants can be overwhelming, but I’m here to help! Do you have any preferences in terms of plant size or style? Knowing the light conditions in your flat is super important, too. For a good starter plant, I’d recommend a monstera. They’re pretty hardy and can grow quite large, but they’re very forgiving—great for beginners!
If you want something easier, pothos are also fantastic; they thrive under various conditions and look great! Philodendrons have lots of varieties and are easy to care for as well. A snake plant is another excellent choice; they’re tough and can survive in low or bright light. You mentioned flowering plants, so consider orchids too! They’re not as hard as you might think; you can tell when they need water! As for soil, it’s best to research individual plants since they have different needs. Most plants like a chunky mix, especially aroids! Hope this helps a bit!

Thanks so much for the great suggestions! I really appreciate it. I think I’d love to try pothos first since they sound pretty manageable. I also love cacti but want to ensure I can provide the right care before diving in. Any tips on soil mixtures would be awesome!
