What Type of Router Should I Start With for My Woodworking Projects?

Hey everyone! I've recently taken up some woodworking and have built a few furniture pieces, including a successful workbench. I'm now looking to expand my toolkit with a router. I've come across different types like plunge and palm routers, and I'm curious about what would work best for me. Should I just go for a plunge router, or is there a better option? Also, I'd love to know the advantages of using a router table and how it fits with both palm and plunge routers. Thanks for your insights!

If you're in it for the long haul, seriously consider getting a router table. It really opens up your capabilities beyond just handheld or plunge routing. Personally, I use the Bosch 1617EVSPK combo router—it's super versatile! Perfect for both tasks and primarily I keep it in the router lift. For smaller work, I have a compact Makita router.

That sounds great! I've been looking at the Bosch too, and I've heard good things about its power.

Just keep in mind that trim routers only accommodate 1/4 shank bits. A mid-sized router around 2.5 HP is a solid starting point. Router tables are excellent for handling smaller or narrower woodpieces and are great for tasks like joinery and template routing. You can make a decent one yourself without it being flimsy!

For beginners, I’d definitely recommend a plunge router. You’re better off having both hands on the machine until you get comfortable with it—it’s safer that way. Plus, plunge routers can do everything a trim can do, and more!

A lot of mid-sized plunge routers come with a fixed base, which is actually perfect for building your own router table. It gives you the versatility to switch between handheld routing and table routing, depending on your project needs!
