What Should I Plant in My Garden with Just 50 Days Left?

Hey everyone! I just found out I'll need to move from my rental in about 7 to 8 weeks, which means I'm leaving behind my garden. I've got some well-prepped soil and space available, but I'm not sure what to plant since it's still pretty hot out. I'm looking for options that will grow within about 50 days. I've got lots of seeds on hand and I'm open to getting transplants if needed. Any suggestions?

If you're working with a 50-day timeline, remember that the days to harvest usually count from when the seeds sprout, which can take a bit longer. For fast-growing options, you might consider lettuce, radishes, and some heat-tolerant greens like Lagos spinach. It grows well in the heat and can substitute for spinach in cooking. Just remember to blanch it first since it’s high in oxalates. Beans and summer squash could work if you find transplants, but I'd be cautious about relying on those. And don't overlook buckwheat! It can bloom in just three weeks, plus it's great for attracting bees if you want to leave something beneficial behind. Think about container plants too, so you can take them with you!

That makes sense! I hadn’t thought of Lagos spinach. Definitely going to check that out.

Radishes are definitely the quickest! They usually sprout in just a few days and are ready to harvest in about a month. Perfect for your situation, plus you can always plant a few different varieties for fun. Just keep in mind the heat - they can taste a bit peppery when it’s hot, but they still grow fast!
