Is the Festool RO 90 DX Worth the Cost? Alternatives?

I'm in the market for a 3" random orbital sander, specifically electric ones. I've come across the Festool RO 90 DX, which seems to be top-notch. However, the price tag is quite hefty, and I've heard the consumables and accessories are also on the expensive side. It's hard for me to justify such a costly investment. Are there any good alternatives out there? For instance, what do folks think about the Milwaukee M12?

I use the Makita DBO481Z, which is a quarter-sheet sander, especially handy on job sites. It's cordless and works like a charm. I also have an ancient corded Makita ROS I picked up ages ago, and it’s still going strong after decades! I love that I can use bulk sandpaper with it, but note that the DBO481Z has a tool for perforating sanding sheets for use with dust extractors.

Metabo once had a 3" sander, but I think it’s been discontinued. I was interested in that model before, but ultimately I’m glad I waited for the RO 90.

You might want to check out Klingspor for compatible discs; they've got some options that are easier on the wallet. As for the Milwaukee, I've heard it's decent, but it lacks dust collection, which is a downside if that's important for you. The Festool does have the Rotex mode for faster material removal, and I haven't really seen any other sander of that size with a gear-driven mode.
