Why is my new garage door opener struggling to lift the door?

I recently replaced my old 1/2 hp chain drive Craftsman garage door opener with a new 1/2 hp Chamberlain belt drive model. However, I'm having some issues. When I try to open my garage door, it starts to lift but then the belt slips on the pulley. Initially, it worked fine until the door was about halfway down and then it started to lower itself slowly. I'm wondering if the new opener isn't strong enough, but since I bought the same horsepower, I thought I might be doing something wrong. The belt is tightened and the springs are also tightened completely. Any advice?

When you disconnect the door from the opener, it should be super easy to open manually. The fact that you mentioned "springs are tightened all the way" is a bit confusing because springs should be balanced to the weight of the door. If the door is hard to move, it could indicate a spring issue.

It sounds like your door springs might be out of balance or even worn out. You should try disconnecting the opener and see if the door stays open halfway. If it drops, it's a sure sign that the springs need to be adjusted or replaced by a pro.
