How Long Can Young Trees Survive Without Water?

I recently had my backyard landscaped and just planted a few young trees from a nursery about a week ago. They were kept in their pots outdoors in the scorching summer heat (around 90°F) until yesterday when I finally got them planted and watered. I'm a bit worried because they went a week without water before being planted. Should I be concerned that they might be dead now, or can I start watering them daily and expect them to survive? The trees I have are Sumoto mandarin, Snow Queen nectarine, and Mexicola avocado. Any tips for a gardening newbie would be great!

Check their leaves — if they look perky and healthy after watering, you’re in the clear! But if they're droopy or shriveled, that's not a good sign. As for transplant shock, expect a bit of wilting, but just keep watering them consistently and they should bounce back.

Be careful about watering them daily; that can actually stress them more. Deep water them every other day or even every three days until they get used to their new spot. In hotter places, newly-planted trees usually need water every couple of days for a while, but you'll want to adjust based on your local climate.

I've had to water every 3 days for my trees since the weather hit over 100°F. It’s tough to find a balance!

They should still be okay! I recommend giving them a deep soak now that they're planted and then just keep up with a regular watering schedule after that. Don't stress too much yet!

That’s a relief! How long can they go without water before they start to die?
