I'm planning to replace my old siding with Hardiplank, but my contractor says they can't remove the existing siding because there's only sheet metal behind it. Instead, they're proposing to install the Hardiplank directly over the old wood siding, which has some rotting issues and is not flat due to its overlapping boards. Initially, the contract stated that they would remove the old siding completely. I'm trying to figure out if this installation method is acceptable according to Hardiplank's guidelines, and whether it will look good in the end. Is it allowed to install over compromised siding like this, or should I push for a different solution?

Yes, you can install Hardiplank over old wood siding as long as it's in reasonably good condition. We did it with our home, and it saved a lot on costs compared to replacing everything. However, make sure they replace any rotted sections with new plywood first. That's key to ensure the structure is sound.

Also, don't forget to ask them about installing a vapor barrier behind the Hardiplank. It helps prevent moisture issues down the line!
