How Can I Soundproof My Apartment from a Noisy Neighbor?

I'm dealing with a noisy neighbor who constantly bangs on the wall, and I've tried several soundproofing methods without success. Initially, I installed sonopan acoustic panels, resilient channels, and 5/8 drywall over the existing wall, but that seemed to worsen the echo. I removed the resilient channels and went with just sonopan and drywall, but the impact noise is still really bad. It's frustrating because I can't move right now due to high rent costs, and it feels like I'm stuck living in this noisy environment. Any suggestions to help improve my situation? Thanks for your assistance!

Consider adding another layer of 5/8 drywall with Green Glue in between; it made a huge difference for me when I had similar issues. Mass building is key! If you're OK with it, that should help reduce the sound transmission significantly. Just make sure to seal all the edges properly after you're done to prevent any leakage!

That sounds like a good plan! I've heard great things about Green Glue too. It's a bummer that your first efforts didn't pay off, but don’t lose hope just yet!

Have you considered sleeping with white noise? It won't completely drown it out, but it might help mask some of that banging. There are plenty of machines available online that work well for that, just make sure you find one with good reviews!

I've actually been using a brown noise machine already, but it seems to help only a little. I'm open to any options that might make a difference!

It sounds like you've already put in a lot of effort. Sometimes the best solution—especially if you're renting—is to have a chat with your neighbor or even your landlord about the ongoing issues. If they're making excessive noise at odd hours, there might be local noise ordinances you can reference to support your case. If all else fails, you might have to consider moving when you can. It’s a tough spot, I know!

Yeah, talking to them didn’t work for me either. The property manager's involvement didn't change anything either. This is driving me insane! I need to find a way out.
