Am I Wasting My Time with Houseplants?

Hi everyone! I'm looking for some honest and straightforward advice about my new hobby — keeping houseplants. I impulsively bought a bunch of plants while recovering from pneumonia, and I really didn't know what I was getting into. They've had a lot of problems like root rot and spider mites, and I've been spending a ton of time and money trying to fix things.

The issue is, I live in a tiny apartment with poor airflow and only two obstructed south-facing windows, plus I have a cat that sheds everywhere! Even though I've put in a lot of effort, I'm starting to wonder if it's realistic for me to keep these plants alive in my conditions. I really care about them, but if the general consensus is that I should give up, I'd like to hear that without any sugarcoating. Is there any hope for me in this hobby, or should I be realistic and let go? Thanks for your input!

Hey! I get where you’re coming from. While I’m not an expert on pests, I can definitely help with plant care tips. Honestly, even if you lose a few plants, you can probably keep most of your collection alive with the right approach. I keep around 20 plants in my small dorm, and while I occasionally neglect them, the ones that thrive really do well! Just be cautious about overextending yourself. You can totally make this hobby work!

Hey there! As a fellow plant enthusiast who also deals with bipolar, it’s important to recognize your limits. If you notice that caring for these plants is actually stressing you out more, it’s okay to let some go. Treat the ones you keep with care, and always inspect new ones thoroughly before bringing them home. A manageable plant collection can definitely bring joy without feeling overwhelming. Don’t give up on this hobby just yet!

Yes! If it ever feels like work, just consider simplifying your setup. Less can be more.

I totally relate! I've had my share of plants die on me during tough times, and the lighting can be a challenge too. But here's the deal: you need to have realistic expectations. Try sticking to heartier plants like pothos — they’re super low-maintenance! Just make sure to inspect them before buying. With some patience and the right plants, you can absolutely build a nice little garden!

Exactly! Pothos are like the cockroaches of the plant world; they just keep thriving no matter what! ?

Right? I’ve had my fair share of survivor plants too! It’s all about finding what works for you.
