What’s the Best Way to Fix a 1-Inch Hole in My Floor?

After some electrical work, a careless electrician accidentally drilled into my bedroom floor, leaving a hole about 1 inch wide and at a 45-degree angle. I'm hoping the electrician will cover the costs, but since they've gone quiet on me, I'm exploring how to fix it myself. Any suggestions? Would a wood plug and some filler work?

If you have wood floors, a quick fix could be to cut out a small piece from the corner of your closet where it won’t be noticeable. Use that piece to patch the hole. Just make sure to match the grain and stain it afterward so it blends in nicely!

Honestly, it sounds like a straightforward fix, but I think it's only fair that the contractor who made the mistake should handle it. You might want to get a quote from a contractor to send to the electrician’s company. Request that they pay you back within 15 days; if they don't respond, consider taking it to small claims court or reporting them to the Better Business Bureau, even if they don't have much power. It's worth a shot!

A simple and effective way to fix that hole is to plug it. First, you'll want to cut a circle or get a dowel that's slightly larger than the hole. If the hole isn't perfectly round, just drill it a bit bigger to make sure it fits well. Sand the edges of the plug until it's a little tapered, then add some wood glue and pop it into place. You might want to tap it gently with a hammer to get a snug fit. Once it's set, trim it down flush with the floor and give it a good wax for a nice finish. Just don't forget to let the glue dry before trimming!
