How to Manage Dust When Carving Near a Newborn?

Hey everyone! I've just welcomed a newborn into my home and I'm a bit worried about dust exposure while I do my woodworking projects. I primarily carve in my outdoor covered car port using rotary tools, but there's no plug for a vacuum out there. I plan to get a Milwaukee M12 vacuum to help with cleanup. I'm only out there for about an hour each week, so the dust generation isn't huge but I work with walnut and other hardwoods. I'm wondering if vacuuming is sufficient for safety, or if it's better to just hold off on carving altogether for now.

If you're working outside and your newborn is indoors (with the AC on), I don’t see a big risk. Just make sure to change your clothes and wash your arms thoroughly before entering your home to avoid bringing any dust inside.

I’d definitely recommend showering and changing your clothes right after carving to minimize any dust transfer when you go back inside. It's great that you're mindful about your baby’s environment!

As long as your newborn stays inside while you carve outside, you should be fine! Before you go back inside, clean up carefully. Consider using hand tools like a mallet and gouge, as those create larger chips instead of fine dust.
