Hey everyone! I'm looking to mount my 40-inch flat screen TV on a brick wall, but I'm facing a couple of challenges. The wall has been painted, so I can't tell where the brick is versus the mortar. Since this is a rental, the real estate agent said I can go ahead with the mounting as long as I don't cause any structural damage. I'm pretty handy, but I'm new to DIY projects and could use some advice from those with experience. What are the best practices for mounting a TV on a brick wall like this? Thanks in advance!

It’s cool that you’re taking on this project! For anchoring your mount, it's good to try and hit the mortar between the bricks if possible, as it's generally easier to fix later. Just be careful because it might not be as strong as going directly into the brick. Make sure you think about how you'll remove it when you leave.
Assuming you have your mount ready, here’s what you need to do: mark where you want to drill, then use tapcon screws to secure it. You'll need a hammer drill with masonry bits—start with a smaller bit to prevent any stripping. Using a nut driver bit will help drive the screws in nicely. Drilling into the brick shouldn't count as structural damage, but double-check with your landlord to be sure!
Thanks for the tip! Is there a way to drill without making it too messy?

That makes sense! But what if you can’t see where the mortar is? I’d hate to mess things up!
