We're living in a house that's over twenty years old. Downstairs, we have engineered hardwood floors, but our stairs and the upstairs are fully carpeted. The carpet is worn out, especially on the stairs, and we plan to replace it in a few years, probably after our oldest dog passes. I really want to replace the carpet with hardwood, but my husband loves carpet so much that he'd rather just put similar carpet back on the stairs. He even suggested replacing all the hardwood with carpet, but that's a big no for me since I adore the wood floors we bought the house with.
Matching the stairs to the existing hardwood would be tricky, maybe even ugly with different wood types. The upstairs carpet is uniform, so I can't just swap out the stairs' carpet. Recently, we visited a stunning open house that had carpet on the stairs and hardwood in the hallways and living areas, which got me thinking that this could work for us too, just to focus on replacing the stairs. However, I'm concerned about how it would look. Is it common to have just carpet on the stairs? Would it look odd?

Having carpet on the stairs is definitely a safer option! It offers better grip and cushion in case of slips, which is especially important if you have pets or kids around. Plus, it adds a nice cozy touch to your home.
I'm all for keeping the carpet on stairs! It’s safer and a lot more comfortable. I had a pretty nasty fall on my wooden stairs before and it's left me feeling a bit cautious about it all. If you're worried about style, you might be pleasantly surprised by the options available!
I think your concerns are valid, but I looked up 'carpet on stairs only' and found plenty of beautiful examples! It can look really cozy and not weird at all, especially if you match the carpet color with the overall decor of your space.
Totally! I think it can look really chic. Would love to see how it turns out!

I almost took a spill on my wooden stairs too! Totally agree that carpet is a safer choice.
