Is $1200 a Fair Price for Stump Removal?

I received a quote of $1200 to remove a stump that measures about 6.5 to 7.5 feet wide and sticks up approximately 30 inches. The stump is partially cut off at the base and is mostly soft and rotted. I was expecting the cost to be a few hundred dollars at most. Does this pricing seem reasonable, or is it overly inflated?

Honestly, I would charge around $300 for that stump if you were local to me. Just cut it flush with a chainsaw and deal with it from there. Sounds like your stump is pretty easy to handle, especially since it's rotted.

Yeah, exactly! I thought $300 was a more realistic price too, so I'm glad to get some validation. It's the first quote I received!

It's worth noting that they're likely going to have to cut the top off first before grinding it down. Still, $1200 sounds excessive unless it was embedded in a tricky spot. Could just be an inflated quote to discourage the job.

That's a good point! Considering its condition, cutting it shouldn't be hard at all.

That sounds pretty steep! Just for your reference, I recently paid $140 to get an 18-inch-wide stump ground down. Your quote seems to be way higher than what is typical, unless there's something unusual about your stump's location or condition.

Thanks, that's helpful! I was just worried I was out of touch with current prices.
