Best Driveway Material for a Steep Driveway?

Asked By SandySkates42 On

I'm seeking advice on the best material for a steep driveway or private road. I've ruled out paving options due to the steepness and short length, which requires 4WD or AWD during the winter months, even with sand spread out. Between dirt/gravel, reclaimed asphalt, and reclaimed concrete, which have you found to be more durable and effective? I'm particularly interested in how well they hold up with rain, how well they compact, and their overall longevity.

We switched to reclaimed asphalt about 5 or 6 years ago, and it's worked wonders! Better than the gravel we had for over 20 years. It really holds up and stays compacted. Plus, it stands up well to plowing in winter, which is a big plus!

Does it hold up to snow plowing well? I’m curious about how it performs in heavy snow!

I had a really steep driveway as a kid, and we used concrete with big cuts to help with the slope. It worked pretty well! Here’s a pic of something similar: [View Image](https://www.reddit.com/r/Concrete/comments/17iv21n/steep_driveway_with_groovers/#lightbox). It might be worth considering alternate cuts if you go that route!
