What’s the Best Way to Treat Wood for an Irrigation Pot?

I'm working on an engineering project to build a smart irrigation system, and we need to create a pot to hold the soil. Since we're limited to using wood, I'm curious about the best treatments to protect it from rotting and moisture absorption. Should we use paint, oil, or something else?

Using a polyurethane coating can really help with moisture resistance. Just make sure it’s suitable for whatever you plan to grow if it’s for edible plants.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll definitely look into it.

Cedar or Hemlock would be great options since they’re more resistant to decay. Also, you could char the wood for extra protection.

If you’re stuck with wood, consider charring it with a method called Shou Sugi Ban. It’s a traditional technique that helps protect the wood without any chemical finishes.

If you plan to grow food, I recommend avoiding any finishes at all. Most wood finishes break down quickly when in contact with moist soil, and anything you use could leach into the soil. You might want to think about using a food-grade liner instead. If this is just for a demo and you don’t mind regular maintenance, then go ahead with the finish.
