Hey everyone! I'm just getting started with woodworking and really eager to build my own set of tools instead of relying on friends and family for the last decade. I've got a budget of $500 in Amazon gift cards and I'm open to buying used tools as well. I'm looking to accumulate several machines and tools, so I'm wondering which items I should buy brand new and which ones I can pick up used. Here's a list of the tools I need: a table saw, miter saw, planer, and jointer. Since I don't have a big workshop, mobility is key! I don't want to invest in low-quality tools that I'll have to replace soon. I'm planning to tackle simple projects like cabinets and a dog ramp for my bedroom. Any recommendations on brands or specific models would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Before deciding, think about what projects you’ll tackle. I mostly build cabinets and useful home items, so I frequently use my miter saw. I upgraded to a new DeWalt 12” sliding saw after 10 years with a cheap one - loved the convenience! Also, I found a solid Delta table saw for $250 on Facebook Marketplace, which was a steal. I recommend going for good-quality used tools and prioritize versatile ones.
Don't forget about portability! If you’re tight on space, go for mobile contractor models for your table and miter saws. It's also smart to buy tools as you need them, so you won't end up with things that just sit around. Clamps are super important too—definitely invest in a good set! Plan for a router and dovetail jig if you're making drawers.
I'd suggest starting with a table saw since it's super versatile for many projects. A used one in good condition works fine! Then get a new planer, just to avoid any surprises from previous use. After that, consider a miter saw depending on your build needs. I’ve got a used jointer that didn’t work well for me, so just be cautious there.
