Is it possible to paint an air duct in my basement?

Hey everyone! I have a question that might seem a bit silly, but here goes. We're in the process of finishing our basement in our 1940s ranch-style home. The ceiling is quite low, and we were thinking about painting it black instead of putting up drywall, especially since there are some awkwardly positioned low-hanging pipes. One side of the basement has what looks like an air duct—it's silver, soft, and squarish, running from the front to the back. I'm wondering if it's okay to paint that duct? Thanks a lot for your help, and sorry if this seems clueless!

Yep, you can definitely paint it! Ducts get painted all the time. Just make sure to use the right type of paint for it.

If it's the flexible type of duct, maybe just box around it instead. That way you avoid painting a potentially problematic surface. Since your ceiling is already low at around 5'10", that could be tricky though.

I'd suggest priming it first since latex paint can peel off metal surfaces quite easily. But you should be good to go! Just make sure it's the right material before starting.
