How to Stain a DIY Guitar Kit?

Asked By StrumAndDrum123 On

I just got my hands on a DIY guitar kit and I'm eager to give it a fresh look by staining it a different color. The kit came sealed from the factory, and I'm aiming for a ceruse finish. Do you think I'll be able to effectively remove most of the sealer to ensure an even coat? I hope my question isn't too basic!

If you follow a good stripping method and sand down properly, you should be in good shape. The key is to bring it down to about 80 grit, then wire brush out the grain before heading up to 220 grit. After that, your staining process should go smoothly!

Sounds like you've got a solid plan! Just be careful and patient during sanding, it really pays off in the end.

It’s totally doable, just takes patience! Stripping the sealer first will make your life a lot easier when applying the new stain. Just make sure you take your time with the process to get that even coat you're looking for. Good luck!

Yeah, I’d recommend starting with a decent stripper to remove the factory seal, then you can work on achieving that nice ceruse effect!
