I'm getting ready to plant some boxwoods in a planter, but the clay soil is extremely hard, and my shovel barely makes a dent. What are some effective methods to break it up and make it easier to work with?

Using dolomite lime can really help to break down that hard clay. It improves the soil structure and makes it easier to work with. You could also try mixing in some organic matter once you break it up a bit.
You won't regret getting a rock bar. It's super useful for breaking up stubborn soil. Just a heads up, though: it's heavy and tough, so watch out when you're swinging it around!
A mattock can be a lifesaver for tough soil. I prefer the smaller 2.5 lb version because it’s easier to control. Just swing it a bit and you'll notice a difference with that clay in no time!
I've found that the hammer-style tools work better for me in the long run, especially in rocky areas. But the mattock is definitely a solid choice!

That's a great point! Safety first—definitely gloves and maybe goggles when you're using it!
