Hey everyone! I recently built and painted my own desk, which I then varnished. However, I'm noticing that some darker areas of the wood and some knots are still visible through the paint. Is it possible to repaint small sections right over the varnish and reapply varnish afterwards? Or would I need to sand it down again to get a good finish? Appreciate any advice you have!

Painting over varnished wood can go either way, depending on the products you're using. If it's just color you're trying to cover, you might be fine with new paint. But if the wood's texture is showing through, more paint alone won't solve it unless you do several coats. To get a good finish on natural wood, especially with knots, consider using a couple of coats of sanding sealer and maybe some wood filler in those knot areas.
If the surface is smooth, your paint won't stick well. You don't have to sand all the way down, but you'll need to scuff up the area a bit to give the paint something to adhere to. Just a light hand-sanding should do the trick!

Got it, thanks! So just a little hand-sanding to rough it up is a good plan.
