I'm trying to install an over-the-range (OTR) microwave, but I'm running into an issue. I have a rear wall vent with ductwork that runs down and out, and because of this, I can't find any studs above the stove to support the mounting bracket. I'm considering using four 50lb toggle bolts instead. Is this a viable option?

It's strange that there are no studs within a typical 30-inch space above your microwave. What is the ductwork secured to if there are no studs? If there's a cabinet above, you might be able to install bolts from there, but I'm wary about relying solely on toggle bolts for support.
Using toggle bolts should be okay since a lot of the weight is actually supported by the cabinet above. Just make sure the toggle bolts are rated for the weight of the microwave, as well as the movement of the door.
If there's a cabinet overhead, you should definitely look into securing it with bolts from there. Just be cautious—don’t depend solely on drywall; it won’t hold up well over time. You may need to explore other options for a solid installation.
