I just moved into a house with a ton of pinholes in the walls, and I'm looking to do some touch-ups. The previous owner provided a color-matched paint, but it didn't blend well at all. I've heard that matching paint colors can be tricky, so I'm curious about whether I were to paint a whole room or house with paint from a big store like Home Depot, and then bought the same paint later on for touch-ups, would I see a perfect match? Or does color fade over time making it hard to get an exact match? If the touch-ups will always look slightly off, it might not be worth it for me to paint the whole house just to have a reliable touch-up color. Appreciate any insights!

Most likely, you won't get a perfect match unless your color is pure white. A lot of factors influence how paint colors turn out, and even the sheen or texture can change how light reflects off it, making touch-ups noticeable. So, it’s pretty common for touch-ups to not blend in seamlessly.
You're right, getting a perfect match can be pretty tough! Even with the color code, there are just too many variables with paint. If you plan to use this color more in the future, buy it all at once and store it for later touch-ups. That way, you'll have a much better shot at matching it closely when you need some extra paint.
Just a heads up, even if you don’t use the whole can of paint and do touch-ups later, the paint on the walls can change color over time. UV exposure and the surrounding air can really affect it, plus the sheen may look different as time goes on, too!
If the paint is a standard color and not custom mixed, you might get lucky! There are also tricks to blending paint so it doesn’t look out of place when touching up. Most people just don’t put in the effort to get it right, but it can be done!

Wow, so even with the code, it might still not match? That’s a bit of a relief to know! I always thought I could get it just right, but now I feel less pressured about it. Thanks for that tip!
