Using Old Soil and Wood Mulch in Raised Planters: Is It Safe?

Hey everyone! I have some raised planters that I'd like to fill with compost and soil. To save on costs, I'm thinking about incorporating some old topsoil and wood mulch I have on hand. Will this be okay to do? Also, should I place the old soil and mulch at the bottom of the planter (where the drainage is) or should it go on top with compost underneath? Appreciate any advice! Thanks!

If you're planning on growing veggies or annuals, you might want to look into hugelkultur! Though it's usually done in the ground, it can also work in containers. Just make sure to protect the wood in your planters with some oil or a liner to prevent rot. But if you're thinking of more permanent plants, be cautious about using decomposing materials long-term since they can lower soil levels over time.

Thanks! That hugelkultur method sounds fascinating; I'll definitely check it out. I did line my planter with plastic sheeting, so I hope that's fine! As for topping up the soil, can I just add more compost later?
