Hey everyone! I've noticed a small damp spot on the ceiling of my upstairs bathroom, close to both the bathroom vent and the AC vent. It's about the size of a lime, and I've been dealing with a musty smell for the past week. There's also some mold on an outlet right outside the bathroom. I'm trying to figure out if this could be a roof leak or if it might be related to the HVAC system instead. Any insights would be appreciated! Thanks!

It could go either way, but from what you're describing, it sounds more like an HVAC issue. Given that the damp spot is near the vent and has a musty smell, it's likely condensation rather than a roof leak. Roof leaks usually create more noticeable damage after rain and spread out quickly. Check your AC drain line to see if it’s clogged or if there’s any condensation around the ductwork. It might be a good idea to get a pro to take a look before it gets worse!
Definitely get that checked out, especially if there's already mold growing by the outlet! If the dampness is ongoing even when it hasn't rained, it points to a problem with condensation from the HVAC or possibly a plumbing leak. You want to avoid any further damage or health issues from mold, so don’t wait too long on this one!
It could be a few things: 1) The AC duct might not be insulated properly, which can cause condensation to form. 2) The toilet vent might have the same issue, especially after steamy showers. 3) If that vent goes through the roof, there might be a leak in the roof flashing. 4) Or, it could be something completely random—and no, not someone trying to pee on the ceiling, though that would be quite the story! Hah! Just better to investigate ASAP!

Totally agree! A clogged drain line could definitely be your culprit. Better to have it checked out just in case.
