I'm in the process of replacing my outdated Pushmatic electrical panel, and I'm considering whether it's difficult to add a whole house surge protector. Are there any downsides to this addition, aside from the extra cost?

Adding a surge protector is pretty straightforward. You just connect it to its own circuit breaker, and you're good to go!
