Hey everyone! I'm looking for some guidance on layering my planter bed, which is 4.5m wide, 65cm high, and 80cm deep. I've been given different advice and want to get it right. I've heard I should start with about 15cm of gravel or coarse bark at the bottom, then add around 25cm of compost, and finish off with a layer of topsoil. Does this sound correct? Thanks a lot for your help!

It sounds like you're on the right track with your layers, but I'd suggest mixing the compost with the topsoil instead of keeping them separate. This helps create a more uniform growing medium and ensures your plants can access nutrients more effectively. Also, don’t forget to include drainage—it's key! If the planter is sealed at the bottom, you definitely want a way for excess water to escape. Good luck with your build!
I recommend checking if your planter has an opening at the bottom. If it doesn’t, consider adding drainage before you layer anything. Some local landscape companies sell great in-house mixes for raised beds which could save you money. I love using a mix that’s 60% topsoil, 20% compost, and 20% sand; it works wonders for plant health! Just make sure you're not dumping gravel in there because it won't help with drainage unless the bottom is sealed.
