What’s the Right Size for a Small Tool Storage Shop?

I'm a carpenter with 14 years of experience, and my wife and I just finished building our house, which took all our energy and resources. Now we're looking to build a modular structure on skids to store my larger tools and outdoor equipment before winter hits. Initially, this space won't be a full workshop, but I want to know what interior dimensions would work best for medium to slightly larger projects. I'm considering keeping it under 20 feet long and 10 feet wide for now. What size do you think is ideal considering future needs?

It really comes down to what tools you plan to use rather than just the project size. I have a 28'x28' garage, and it can get tight with all my gear. If you're not planning on housing too many tools, it sounds like you're considering something like a 'micro shop,' which is a neat idea. Just make sure you think about how you will organize the space!

A 10x20 space can get cramped if you have more than three pieces of equipment. I have a 20x20 shop, and I still struggle with space for tools and wood at the same time. You might also want to consider getting a pre-made shed or a pole building instead; they both come with their own benefits and drawbacks.
