I recently had new windows installed to replace my old single-pane ones, which were causing a lot of condensation and making the paint peel. Now, I'm looking to repaint the old window trim afterward, hoping to address any potential damage from the installation. However, I've noticed new caulk has been applied along the window frame, and in some spots, it's too close to where I'll need to remove the peeling paint. Should I carefully scrape and sand around the new caulk, or is it better to remove the caulk entirely and then recaulk after painting? I'm pretty new to this, so I'm unsure what to do!

Honestly, it might be best to remove the new caulk and replace it after you paint. If you try to scrape around it, you risk damaging it—it’s better to start fresh. Plus, make sure to use paintable caulk when you put it back on. It sounds like you didn’t realize all the peeling paint issues before the windows went in, but it’s a great call to address them now!

Thanks for the advice! I’m definitely leaning towards that now. Just wish I had noticed the state of things earlier.
