What Should I Do If My Deck Contractor Isn’t Responding?

I hired a contractor to build a small deck in my backyard and paid a 50% deposit of $4,250. The work was supposed to start on July 31, but it hasn't begun yet. I've been reaching out to him every couple of days for updates, but I've only received one response. He mentioned he would come last week to start leveling, but that didn't happen. I've tried calling multiple times today but got no answer. I can dispute the charge with my credit card company, but I'd prefer to get the job completed. I understand contractors often juggle multiple jobs, but communication feels crucial. Should I keep waiting, file a dispute, or contact him to terminate the contract and ask for my money back? I'm not in a huge rush, but I don't want this to be a drawn-out issue with my money at stake. Any advice would be appreciated!

It sounds frustrating! Unfortunately, if he's already taken your deposit and hasn't started any work, there's a risk he may disappear. You could set a firm deadline for him to start or provide an update. If he misses the deadline, that might be a red flag to initiate a chargeback with your card company. Being proactive can help, but just be cautious since contractors sometimes do this after receiving a deposit!

That makes sense. I think I might give him a deadline and see if he responds. Better safe than sorry!

Totally agree! Plus, if you have all those messages as evidence, that’ll support your case if you go for a chargeback.

Good contracts usually balance the responsibilities of both parties, ensuring the contractor has a reason to complete the work. It’s a shame this one didn’t provide the right incentives. Giving him a deadline could help, but it's a risk that he may just do enough to keep you hanging. If your patience runs thin, initiating that chargeback is a valid option since no work has been done so far!

Exactly! And since you have the documentation of your efforts to reach out, that’ll definitely bolster your case.

Just be careful; if he starts some work, it could complicate things if you go through with a chargeback.
