What’s the Best Wood for Carving and Where to Get It?

I'm diving into wood carving and started with some scrap wood I found locally. Unfortunately, it was flaky and tough to work with. I've heard basswood is the go-to for beginners, but it's quite pricey online. I'm curious, what types of wood do you all use for carving, and where do you source it?

I usually grab wood from people who are cutting down trees or branches. It's a goldmine for finding cool, unique pieces, and it's free! Just keep in mind that you'll probably have to sort through some wood that you might not want to use.
