Mysterious Gas-Like Smell in My Apartment—What Could It Be?

I woke up around 4am to a really strong gas-like smell in my apartment (I'm on the 3rd floor of a three-family building). I had been home all day and noticed nothing unusual until then. I called 911, and after checking, the firefighters confirmed there was no gas leak. The smell isn't present in the other units, and my landlord said he can't do anything since there's no leak. I tried airing out the place with Ozium, fans, and open windows, but the smell was still there, just weaker, when I left for work. I'm really worried about what this could be and how it appeared out of nowhere. Any thoughts or advice?

Could it be sewer gases? Sometimes if the traps in the drains dry out, it can let those smells escape into your home. Try running some water in every drain to fill the traps back up.

Did you happen to order any Mexican food recently? Those meals can sometimes come with strong, lingering odors.

Have you checked for a dead rodent? Those things can really give off a nasty smell. I know it’s tough when you have a cat because they could potentially bring something home. Maybe look around the kitchen especially near the fridge where the smell seems strongest. Just a thought!

I checked under everything I could, but didn’t find any sign of a dead animal. I’ll keep looking though, just in case!
