Do I Need to Leave Space Around My Vented Gas Heater When Installing Carpet Tiles?

I'm installing thin peel-and-stick carpet tiles in my new home to cover a damaged floor (thanks to some pet accidents), and I have a question about the vented gas heater in the room. I'm not familiar with how these heaters work, but I assume I shouldn't carpet right under it, similar to how you'd leave space in front of a fireplace. How much space do I need to leave around the heater before the carpet tiles can begin? Should I consider using ceramic tile around the heater as well?

Yeah, leaving a gap is crucial! The 12-inch rule is pretty standard, but make sure to check the manufacturer’s guidelines too, just in case. As for the tile, that might give you a nice, clean look and protect from any heat damage. Plus, it’ll make cleaning the area easier!

It's definitely a good idea to leave some space around your gas heater! Usually, people recommend leaving at least 12 inches of uncarpeted space around it. This helps with airflow and safety, as carpeting can potentially catch fire. As for using tile, many choose to install ceramic tiles in front of heaters for better durability and easy cleaning.

I totally get your concern! In addition to leaving space, using a sealing primer like Zinsser or Kilz on the subfloor can be helpful for odors. Just focus on the stained areas; you don’t need to cover the whole floor unless the smell is everywhere.
