How Can I Make Paint Stick to Laminated MDF?

Asked By CraftyPineapple87 On

I bought a flat-pack cabinet from Home Depot made of smooth laminated MDF and used Bullseye 123 Primer followed by water-based paint. After applying two coats of everything, I've noticed white spots showing through and the paint peels off easily when scratched with a fingernail. I want to figure out the best way to ensure that paint adheres well to slick laminate surfaces, especially since I'm planning to paint some IKEA furniture next. Any advice?

A bonding primer is key for this kind of surface. Make sure to scuff the laminated area first, as this will help the primer adhere properly. It's surprising how much of a difference that can make!

To improve adhesion, you should definitely sand the surface lightly using 180-220 grit sandpaper before painting. That helps create a better texture for the primer to grab onto. Then, clean it up with acetone to remove any dust or oils. This should help prevent the issues you’re experiencing!

I was in the same boat before! Sanding really changed the game for me, helped the paint stick better.
