Best Ways to Cover Hinge Plate Recesses in Door Casing?

Asked By CraftyExplorer42 On

I'm in the process of moving a door back a few inches in a door frame that has a pretty unusual thickness, making recasing quite complicated. I need to deal with the hinge plate recesses that are mortised into the existing casing. Since I'm dealing with standard hinges, I'm wondering if using Bondo wood filler will hold up well at a thickness of 1/8". Any advice would be appreciated!

I've had success using standard Bondo (not the wood filler) for filling door handle or lock assembly holes on old wooden doors. It should be just fine for hinge mortises too!

So when people say 'Bondo', do they actually mean standard auto body filler?

I renovated an 1860s home and didn't face any issues using shim stock as filler for my hinge plate recesses, and all my moldings were painted. That worked out great!
