Do I Really Need Plywood for Hardie Board on My 1926 House?

I'm working on my house, which was built back in 1926. Under the exterior wood siding, I can see there are horizontal wood planks. My contractor mentioned that I can't attach Hardie board directly to these existing planks and that I'll need to put plywood up instead. Is this true? I thought Hardie board could be attached directly to the studs. Why can't we just put the moisture barrier over the existing interior wood panels? Thanks for your help!

You probably don't need to install plywood unless there’s rotten wood that needs replacing. Check for any damage, but otherwise, you should be able to go straight with the Hardie board!

What if the wood has shrunk and there's a gap between the boards? Would we still be okay without plywood?
