Hey everyone! I'm a total newbie and just bought my first home. I've got a lot of my dad's tools and I'm excited to start learning. One of my first projects is to build a couple of workbenches that I can move around the garage. We're also renovating our kitchen and I have an old laminate countertop that we can't donate because it has a cutout for the sink. I was thinking maybe I could cut out the sink part and use the remaining pieces for the workbench tops. Is this a good idea or a bad one? I hate the idea of throwing materials away if there's a way to use them!

For sure, you can use that countertop! I've turned a laminate piece into a glue-up table and it worked like a charm; all the drips just scrape off. Just a heads up, if it's thin, you might want to add some support underneath for stability.
Definitely use that laminate countertop! It can make a solid work surface, just keep in mind it might be a bit slippery. You can use rubber pads to reduce sliding, or consider some silicone shelf liner, which helps grip things better and is easy to clean. Also, if you have any dried glue, it comes off easily with a putty knife.
I think it's a great idea! Laminate is usually nice and flat, making it perfect for a workbench. It's also super easy to clean, especially if you're dealing with glue. Just know that it can be slippery, so it might not be your only work surface, but it'll definitely get the job done for assembling things or as an outfeed table for your saw.

Exactly! I've used mine for years without any major issues, just keep it clean and it'll serve you well!
