Tips for Growing Garlic Over the Winter in Western Washington

Asked By CuriousGardener92 On

Hey everyone! I had a successful first-time experience growing onions this summer, and now I'm thinking about trying garlic. I've heard it needs to be planted in the fall, survives the winter, and then is ready for harvest in the summer. Does that sound right? Also, will garlic thrive in western Washington? Any advice or tips would be much appreciated!

Yeah, you're on the right track! Plant your garlic around Halloween, and you should be harvesting it by July. I recommend hardneck varieties because they do better in your climate. I've grown some great bulbs here, too!

That sounds like a solid plan! I'm all in for hardneck varieties, too. They tend to have a stronger flavor, right?

Absolutely, garlic is super easy to grow! I planted mine last fall around late November, and it turned out great! I used leaves and some chicken wire to keep critters away. By spring, I saw sprouts, and by June, I had scapes. I harvested them in the first week of July after stopping watering in mid-June. All in all, it was pretty low-maintenance and now I've got a big stash of garlic!

I'm also in western Washington and can confirm garlic grows really well here! I usually plant mine in mid to late October and harvest by late June. Just make sure you get some high-quality seed stock. I prefer varieties like German Extra Hardy because they do really well in our climate. You got this!

That's awesome to hear! I’ll look for those varieties, thanks for the tip!
