What’s the Safest Way to Remove an Old Light Fixture?

I've got this old, ugly light fixture in my wall that doesn't work anymore, and I want to get rid of it for good. Here's what I've been thinking: 1) Unscrew the light fixture like I did in some earlier pictures, 2) Unscrew the metal base sticking out of the wall, 3) Cut any wires that are left behind, 4) Cover the hole with a wall patch I bought, and 5) Apply some drywall spackling over the patch. Is there anything I'm overlooking or should be cautious about while doing this?

Before you think about removing the fixture, have you considered just replacing it with something you like? It might actually save you the hassle of patching and painting! Just remember to disconnect and cap the wires properly, and then tuck them behind a cover plate instead of hiding them.

You can't just cover the wires with spackle since they need to stay accessible. Make sure the power is off first, then remove the fixture, cap the wires, and put a blank plate over the box. If you're feeling decorative, paint the plate to blend with your wall! Just don't underestimate the electricity here.

What exactly is a 'blank plate'? Is there any alternative to covering it?

Would using electrical tape on the wires work after cutting? Just trying to understand my options.

You're definitely missing some knowledge about electrical safety here! First off, you really shouldn't cut the wires without turning off the power at the breaker first. You need to remove the fixture and cap off the wires properly, then install a blank paintable cover for the electrical box instead of just hiding everything with spackle. If you’re unsure, it might be wise to call an electrician.

Oh wow, I didn't even think about needing a blank cover! Thanks for the tip!
