How Can I Identify the Right Circuit Breaker for My Outdoor Lamppost?

I'm looking to replace the solar sensor (photocell) on my outdoor lamppost, but I'm unsure which circuit breaker controls it. Unfortunately, the switches aren't labeled, so I need some advice on how I can safely turn off the power before I make the swap. What steps should I take to identify the correct switch?

Just double-check if the photocell itself is functional before you replace it. Sometimes they can get stuck in the open position or even welded closed.

A good way to find the right breaker is to turn the lamp on and then switch off one breaker at a time until the light goes out. This way, you'll know which breaker controls it. Just make sure you're in a safe spot while doing this!

That method works well unless you have a circuit tracer handy. If you do, it might make things a bit easier. Start with the lower amperage breakers first.

Just a heads-up, the lamp doesn’t actually have a manual switch, right? If it only lights up from the photocell, you'll need to figure that into your plan!

Another cool trick is to turn the lamppost on at night, then flip the breakers one by one until it turns off. You could also have a buddy help you with that—just make sure they’re watching the lamp!

If you want to keep a light on while flipping breakers, that's tricky since the broken photocell won't let you test it. But a multimeter could help if you know how to use it.

Yeah, but without the photocell working, you won’t be able to tell which switch connects to the lamp post. You'll need to get creative!
