This morning, I noticed an unexpected smell in my house that resembles wood polish or paint thinner. The odor is pervasive throughout the home, but it's strongest near the water heater and furnace in the basement. I tried turning off the AC and opening the windows to air it out, which helped a bit, but the smell is still lingering. I had an HVAC technician inspect my furnace and AC unit, but they couldn't determine the source of the smell. Both appliances are 27 years old and still functioning, although I know they won't last forever. I'm considering calling an electrician to check the wiring, but I'm really worried about the source of this smell. It seems to originate from the basement area near the HVAC and water heater.

If you keep the AC running but turn off the water heater, does the smell still linger as strongly? I’m guessing both the AC and water heater are gas-operated? Also, have you considered having a mold inspection done? It might be pricey, but an air quality analysis could reveal a lot. And when was the last time you drained your water heater?
That happened to me once, and it was actually due to burning wiring. I suggest flipping off any unnecessary breakers in the area to see if that makes the smell go away. Just be careful while doing it!
Is there sewer work happening in your town right now? My neighborhood is relining sewers, and we’ve been dealing with this awful epoxy smell that feels almost like glue or sharpie marker. It's strong enough to give me headaches!
