I'm currently a cabinet maker and carpenter considering branching out on my own as a subcontractor. I'm open to various types of work that will help me make a living. I dream of having my own shop one day, but the reality is that I live in a big city and have limited contacts, aside from past employers. I'm curious to hear from others in the field: How much do you make annually, and what type of work do you do? Any advice would also be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

A buddy of mine in Anchorage is doing really well, remodeling bathrooms and making upwards of $80,000 per project. He primarily works with wealthy clients, so his earnings are pretty solid compared to others. It just goes to show how much location can impact income!
I think it really depends on whether you’re asking about a livable wage in your specific area. In Chicago, installers might earn between $40-$50 an hour for installation work. Just make sure to factor in your living expenses when considering your income!
It's tough to pin down exact numbers since earnings can vary a lot by region. In Alabama, for example, I make about $17.50 an hour, working across various tasks like cabinet making and furniture design. Many shops around here are struggling, so I’d say it depends heavily on your area.
Yeah, it seems like a lot of shops in the South are feeling the pinch these days.

I'm in NYC, so I guess my rates might be different!
