Struggling With My Garden – What Easy Plants Can I Grow?

Hey fellow gardeners! I've been trying to cultivate my small garden corner for a few years now, and while I've achieved a few minor successes, most of my plants either struggle to thrive or die off within a year or two. I'm looking for some foolproof plant suggestions that might stand a chance in my area. Here are some details:

- It's a south-facing spot in the north of England, getting good sunlight during the sunny months, but there's some shade from a tall hedge. The space is about 4m x 4m, so it's not huge.

- I prefer plants that can thrive in pots but I'm open to digging if needed.

- Ideally, I want greenery or colorful plants that look great year-round and then produce beautiful flowers or fruits in spring and summer.

- I can manage regular watering, feeding, and basic maintenance but I'd love something that requires lower upkeep. I can likely commit a couple of hours each week to care for it.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Make sure to use large pots because containers dry out quickly! Consider layering bulbs that bloom at different times to keep color in your garden throughout the seasons. And if some perennials fade after a few years, try propagating them to keep new plants coming! For shrubs, a flowering variety like the Hebe Silver Queen could work well, but keep in mind it might need some winter protection. Happy gardening!

For year-round foliage, I've had great luck with ivy, hebe, rosemary, and sage. They're all container-friendly and pretty low maintenance. If you're looking for colorful summer blooms, consider lavender, buddleia, or hardy geraniums. Pansies are also fantastic -- they’ll pop up every year without much hassle. Just remember, container plants generally need more care than those in the ground. You'll need to keep them watered, especially in the summer!

Have you thought about growing bamboo in pots? They stay green all year round and grow tall, providing privacy. The key is to keep them well-watered since they love moisture. Just a little regular care and you’ll have beautiful foliage all year! There are different varieties, too, so you might find one that suits your taste. Make sure to check out some articles online about bamboo care!
