How Can I Keep Hogs From Destroying My Garden Saplings?

Hey everyone! I live in a rural area with a pretty big garden—about 2 acres—near the Mediterranean, so it tends to be quite dry. I've recently started planting saplings, but I'm running into a major issue: feral hogs keep getting into my garden and breaking them. I've got a metal fence around the place, but those pesky hogs manage to dig underneath it. Electric fences are unfortunately not an option for me. So I'm looking for any advice on how to either keep the hogs out entirely or at least protect my saplings if they do get in. Thanks for any help!

Honestly, one of the oldest tricks in the book is just to eat them! Just kidding, but seriously, if you have a hunting license or if that’s allowed in your area, you might want to consider that option. In the meanwhile, try using a sturdier barrier around your saplings.

First off, you definitely want to make sure you're dealing with those feral hogs! If you want to keep them out, consider creating a mote-like setup for your saplings. Hogs aren’t great jumpers, so digging a trench around your planting area and mounding the soil on the inside could really help. That way, they have to deal with a barrier they can't easily get over. You could also try reinforcing the base of your fence. Good luck!
