Should I Spend Nearly $1000 on Repairs for My Old Furnace?

I recently bought a house, and just three days in, the 20-year-old furnace stopped working. An HVAC technician diagnosed it with a faulty circuit board and transformer, quoting me a repair cost of $929 but admitting that he's not sure it will fully resolve the issue. I'm torn about whether to go ahead with this expensive repair or look for other options. I'm also concerned since the first guy I called claimed that the furnace wires were ripped out by my movers, which seemed far-fetched. Buying a new furnace feels like too much right now, but this is all pretty overwhelming since I'm a first-time homeowner. What should I do?

I think it's worth spending the $929 if you have the cash. Just remember, at 20 years old, you might be ready to replace the whole system soon anyway. The parts themselves aren't super pricey, but if the circuit board is faulty, the tech cannot really troubleshoot any other potential issues it could be having. So, hope for the best!

Totally! My furnace ran for over 32 years, but when I replaced it, it was just because the AC coils were leaking. It’s a gamble, but it might work for you!
