I'm framing an old family map as a gift for my husband, and I just found out the glass alone will weigh about 25 lbs! The map itself is 36x57 inches, and I initially planned on using oak from Home Depot. Now, I'm reconsidering whether I should take this on since that glass weight sounds pretty hefty. I'm looking for any "how to" guides or personal tips that might help me with this project!

A quality oak frame should be able to handle that weight without any issues. Mitering the corners is a great start; just consider adding some reinforcements for peace of mind. Also, if you're worried about the weight, you could look into using a heavier plastic instead of glass that might be less fragile and easier to work with. Just my two cents!

Thanks for the reassurance! I've heard about using silicone to secure the glass—does that sound like a good idea? Also, I might check into some plastic options if I can find them.
