I've been doing maintenance on my 4Runner and some other projects over the past year, and I've heard a lot about the size advantages of using 3/8 impact wrenches compared to 1/2. But I'm curious—are people referring to the actual size of the wrench itself, or are 3/8 sockets really lower profile than 1/2 sockets? Where does the size benefit actually come into play? Because honestly, they both look pretty similar to me!

3/8 sockets are definitely smaller than 1/2 sockets. They use less material, have a smaller base, and you can usually find more size options available for them. For example, a standard 10mm 3/8 socket will have a base about the same size as the rest of its body, while a 1/2 socket will have a much larger base that can make it tricky to work in tight spots.
I agree with you on the 3/8 size preference. I usually pick it up first unless I need the extra torque from my 1/2 impact, which I mostly keep because I've got a ton of 1/2 sockets I don't want to dump. Plus, those Harbor Freight deals are just too good!
